Map and directions

Fellside Studios are right in the heart of the Lake District, yet really quick and easy to get to…

We are perfectly located in the peaceful Troutbeck valley – yet only 30 minutes from the M6 at Junction 36, less than 45 minutes from Junction 40, and only a few minutes drive from both Windermere and Ambleside town centres.

Brian & Monica Liddell, Fellside Studios, Troutbeck, near Windermere, Cumbria LA23 1NN. Tel: 015394 34000

Our correct postcode is LA23 1NN. We were allocated this new postcode a few years ago, but the old one still seems to have a life of its own. Please check you’ve got the new one in your GPS – or you could end up at Troutbeck Bridge, 3 miles away from Troutbeck village!

To follow our directions on a detailed local map, or checkout alternative local routes, you can view or download our Fellside Studios walking map.

If you need help finding us, or getting here, please call us anytime on 015394 34000, ideally before you get into the Troutbeck valley, as we have poor mobile phone reception, except for Vodafone who have a mast on the hillside opposite us.

Directions from M6 Junction 36 (about 30 minutes)

jesus-church-from-bridge
Jesus Church from the stone bridge on the A592 – turn left here!

This is the most straightforward route to Fellside, with good A-roads right up to the last couple of hundred yards:

  1. Follow the A591 west for about 15 miles, by-passing Kendal and then passing through the top end of Windermere.
  2. You'll pass a traffic island and the NatWest Bank on the left, facing the Windermere Hotel on the right, with a pedestrian crossing between them.
  3. Stay on the A591 for another 1/2 mile towards Ambleside.
  4. At the mini-roundabout (a painted circle in the road), turn right onto the A592, signposted to 'Patterdale and Kirkstone Pass'.
  5. After 3 miles on the A592, immediately after a stone bridge, but before Jesus Church, turn left into a narrow lane signposted 'Troutbeck 1/4 mile'.
  6. After about 250 yards, Fellside is the first building on the right – watch out for the wooden sign on the wall next to our gate.
  7. If you're booked into Studio 1, please go to the back of our property and park anywhere in our rear parking area.
  8. If you're in Studio 2, park at the front of our property, alongside the low wall on our front shrub garden.

Directions from M6 Junction 40 (about 45 minutes)

Watch out for the hand-carved sign next to our gate (usually minus the snow!)

This is one of our favourite drives in the Lake District. The scenery is glorious. But in poor weather, or if you'd prefer an easier drive, it's only about 20 minutes longer to continue south on the M6 to Junction 36, and then follow our directions above.

  1. Follow the A66 west for about 1 mile to a large roundabout, and take the A592 exit signposted to 'Ullswater'.
  2. Stay on A592, ignoring all signs to the wrong 'Troutbeck' (there are two Troutbecks in Cumbria!)
  3. Continue on the A592, alongside the beautiful shores of Ullswater, then crossing over the 1,500 foot Kirkstone Pass.
  4. Keep left at the fork just after the top of the Kirkstone Pass, staying on the A592.
  5. After about 22 miles in total on the A592, ignore the right fork signed to Troutbeck village, and continue past the Queen's Head Inn for a further 3/4 mile. (Sadly the Queen's is currently closed after a fire in 2014, and there are traffic lights here.)
  6. Then, immediately after Jesus Church, turn right into a narrow lane signposted 'Troutbeck'.
  7. After about 250 yards, Fellside is the first building on the right – watch out for the wooden sign on the wall next to our gate.
  8. If you're booked into Studio 1, go to the back of our property and park anywhere in our rear parking area.
  9. If you're in Studio 2, park at the front of our property, alongside the low wall on our front shrub garden.

Directions on foot from Windermere Station (about 75 minutes)

You can't miss this sign opposite the NatWest Bank – but watch out for the second signpost after 20 yards

It's a bit over an hour's walk from Windermere Rail Station to Fellside Studios. It's very beautiful, but mainly uphill, so not really an option when you've just arrived with heavy bags, and absolutely not recommended after dark. But it's still our favourite way of getting to and from Windermere:

  1. Turn left out of Windermere Rail Station, walk 100 yards and cross the road to the NatWest Bank, then cross the main road to a large white sign opposite the bank saying 'Footpath to Orrest Head'.
  2. Follow this footpath uphill for about 20 yards, and at another signpost take the left footpath signposted to 'A592 Troutbeck Rd'.
  3. Keep to this footpath through woods, crossing over several small driveways, and ignoring two footpaths which branch off to the right towards Orrest Head.
  4. After about 3/4 mile, at a big iron gate, turn right onto the A592.
  5. Follow the A592 uphill for about 2 miles, all on a protected footpath, except for a short section alongside Windermere School, where you'll need to take extra care.
  6. Immediately after a stone bridge, and just before Jesus Church, turn left into a narrow lane signposted 'Troutbeck 1/4 mile'.
  7. After about 250 yards, Fellside is the first building on the right – watch out for the sign on the wall next to our gate.

Directions by bicycle from Windermere Station (about 25 minutes)

cycle-routes
This sign is actually just beyond the turning at step 2, so if you see it you've gone too far!

The most direct cycle route to Fellside from Windermere Station is via the A591 and A592. However there's a slightly longer but much quieter route as follows:

  1. From Windermere Station turn right onto the A591 (towards Kendal), walking on the pavement for about 100 yards, until the start of the cycle lane.
  2. After about 1/2 mile on the A591 cycle lane, turn left into a narrow lane (towards Common Farm).
  3. Follow this lane for about 1 mile, past Common Farm, straight across the first crossroads, and then turn left at the T-junction (Moore Howe Lane).
  4. Follow Moore Howe Lane for about 1 mile, keeping right at the Y-junction, and then turn right onto the A592 at the foot of a steep hill.
  5. Follow the A592 for about 1/2 mile, until immediately after a stone bridge, just before Jesus Church, turn left into a narrow lane signposted 'Troutbeck 1/4 mile'.
  6. After about 250 yards, Fellside is the first building on the right – watch out for the wooden sign on the wall next to our gate.
